EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful therapeutic approach that harnesses the brain’s natural healing process to reduce distressing emotions, thoughts and body sensations tied to traumatic or painful life experiences. In the same way that your body naturally works to heal a physical injury, your brain has the same capacity and instinct to move towards healing. When distressing life events occur, sometimes the resulting overwhelm throws a wrench into our natural adaptive processing of the experience, and we get stuck with looping negative beliefs, distressing emotions and body sensations. EMDR works to remove what is blocking the healing process and invite in true, adaptive information to be integrated into your memory networks.

It’s kind of like a software update for your internal operating system.

So…how does it work?

EMDR is a multi-phase process that begins with developing resources to calm & regulate the nervous system before any reprocessing of past memories occur. During the reprocessing phase, bilateral stimulation is used (rhythmic back and forth stimuli), such as eye movements, hand tapping, or auditory tones, to help clients process distressing memories in a safe and controlled way—essentially, recalling a painful memory places one foot in the past while bilateral stimulation keeps one foot in the present. Through this process, distressing memories, emotions and body sensations begin to lose their charge and this makes way for adaptive beliefs to emerge.

Who Benefits from EMDR?

EMDR therapy is effective for treating a broad range of challenges clients face like anxiety, depression, phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other responses to trauma. It can be applied to single-incident traumas (i.e. car wrecks, natural disasters, assault, etc.) or complex trauma (i.e. ongoing abuse, neglect, or community violence).

EMDR can safely be done in a virtual therapy format and is the primary model of therapy used by practice owner/therapist, Meredith Staley.
